BIOL 1831 Lab

Final Presentation Organization and Rubric

During our last lab session of the semester, each student will independently be giving a 5-minute oral presentation with PowerPoint slides covering information from their assigned journal article that uses the RFLP technique to analyze a SNP involved in a human disease/health condition.

Your presentation should be divided into at least 6 PowerPoint slides as outlined below.  If you wish to use additional slides for transitions or to spread the required information over multiple slides, you may do so.

Your presentation and attendance together for this lab session is worth 25 points.

             20 points for your presentation

5 points for your attendance and attention to ALL other student presentations

Table of required slides

Slide #

Slide name

Content to be included on slide

Points

1

Title slide

Title of journal article and student name, both
prominently on top half of slide; full citation of article written a bit
smaller on bottom half of slide.

1

2

Gene and SNP information

Name of gene where SNP is located (or near), ID name of
SNP, nucleotide options at SNP and allele frequencies in populations, at
least 2 distinct pieces of information about the function of the gene as
bulleted points, and include a picture representing the gene function.

3

3

Disease information

Name of disease associated with the SNP, at least 4
distinct pieces of information about the disease as bulleted points, and
include a picture representing the disease.

3

4

Diagram of RFLP

Diagram showing the size of the uncut PCR product, the
name of the restriction enzyme used and sizes of cut products, which
nucleotide allele is associated with the uncut or cut products, and fragment
sizes expected if heterozygote.

3

5

Gel figure

Informative title on the slide describing the figure, and
label each lane of the gel image with an informative genotype label if not
already.  Label DNA bands as uncut PCR
product, bands cut at SNP, or other cut bands, and include sizes if not
already on the figure.  Do NOT put the
figure legend from the paper on the slide.
Write in 2-3 brief, bulleted points that explain the main conclusions
that can be drawn from the gel data.

3

6

Significance/benefits

Explain the benefits of obtaining data about this SNP using
the RFLP method described and implications for disease diagnosis.

2

Visual appeal of slides

Slides are organized in a visually appealing way, font is
large enough to see from the back of the room, and information is provided
succinctly

2

Presentation skills

Voice projects to back of room; eye contact is made with
audience; points directly to screen to show audience particular parts of
figures, diagrams, etc; presentation done between 4.5-5.5 minutes
